Ear Wax: How Does an Audiologist Clean Ears?

If you have an excessive amount of ear wax, we recommend you don’t do anything at home to try to remove it.

The simplest and cleanest way to clean ears is by use of suction. This is one of the ways we clean ears at HearCare Audiology, and it has been a widely used practice for a long time.

Regardless of how we clean there are two important factors: vision and light. To expand and magnify what we can see in the ear, we use surgical grade loupes to gain a high degree of magnification.

Good light is necessary when we clean an ear to clearly see what we’re working on. Most audiologists would use a speculum in the ear to hold the light against the patient’s ear and see what we’re doing.

Then we use little like a suction, almost like a vacuum made for your ear. Most people can’t feel it. It is a little bit noisy because it is suction. With good light and good vision to get in the person’s ear, we’re able just to pull that wax out the ear. That’s usually the simplest method to clean wax from the ear.
