What can trigger vertigo?
Vertigo is basically a dizzy sensation that you feel when the information in your brain doesn’t match up with what your body is experiencing. This can be caused by an ear infection or other ailments. The most common causes of this condition are benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, and Meniere’s disease. BPPV occurs when calcium builds up in canals of the inner ear and causes brief dizziness that lasts from 20 seconds to one minute.
BPPV is a condition that causes brief episodes of dizziness. These can be triggered by specific changes in your head’s position, such as when you tip it up or down, when you lie down, or when you turn over or sit up in bed. You might feel like the room is spinning and when you experience this, you need to sit down or lie down right away.
Vertigo Symptoms
Vertigo is a condition in which the person feels as if they are spinning, also known as dizziness. Vertigo can make it difficult to stand up straight and even get out of bed. The symptoms worsen with movement such as rolling over in bed or turning your head quickly. Many people experience nausea and vomiting.
BPPV always brings about symptoms but the type of symptom can vary from person to person. Some people have trouble balancing while others experience dizziness after changing their head position.
It is highly advised that you seek medical attention immediately if you are experiencing frequent dizziness because it might also be a symptom of high blood pressure.
Will vertigo go away on its own?
When a person has vertigo, they can feel like the world is spinning. It usually only lasts for a few minutes, but sometimes it can last for hours or even weeks! When you have this condition and it doesn’t go away on its own in a few minutes, there are treatments that doctors recommend including anti-nausea drugs to help slow down your dizziness so you can get back to living life normally instead of feeling nauseous all day long.
When to see a doctor?
With persistent signs of vertigo, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. They will ask about your symptoms and can carry out a simple examination to help determine some types of vertigo. They may also refer you for further tests so that they can get an accurate diagnosis on what is causing the problem.
Depending on what’s causing your vertigo, there are several other symptoms that may manifest at the same time, like high fever and ringing in your ears (tinnitus) along with hearing loss.
How is vertigo treated?
In some cases of vertigo, the symptoms improve over time and without treatment. But for those with Ménière’s disease, it can be a never-ending cycle of repeated episodes that last months or years.
There are treatments for some causes of vertigo. One such treatment includes a series of simple head movements (known as the Epley maneuver) that can be used to treat BPPV.
Medicines, such as prochlorperazine and some antihistamines, can help in the early stages or most cases of vertigo. To be more specific, there is still no product that can treat vertigo. The only available drugs are those than can treat or relieve the symptoms brough about by vertigo.
For most people with vertigo, vestibular rehabilitation training (VRT) is the answer. A series of exercises for dizziness and balance problems, VRT has helped many feel better after just a few sessions.
These series of exercises help those with dizziness and balance problems to regain control over themselves. For many patients, it only takes a few sessions before they are feeling much better than they were before VRT.
